Couldn't put the book down, I think I read the whole thing in like 2 days. It's hard to imagine that its actually a work of fiction and not a real memoir much less that it was written by a man.

It may not be an earth-shattering revelation that people cannot properly live on minimum wage, but this account of the day-to-day living situations of Americans working as waitresses, housecleaners, Wal-Mart staff, etc. is eye-opening in its portrayal of the small struggles they face each day that you may not have ever considered. Yes, maybe you can find an apartment with "affordable" rent, but if you're living paycheck-to-paycheck where do you get the money for the security deposit? When you only get two 15-minutes breaks during your 9 hour shift, do you use them to go to the bathroom, inhale a sandwich, get off your feet, or smoke a cigarette? This book is required reading for anyone who's ever looked at a poor, single mother with 3 children and thought "Why don't you get off of welfare and get a job?" Odds are she probably already has a job ... or 2, or 3 ... and it's not enough.
