The other week, I was a bit melancholy for various reasons and the cover of this book cheered me up. I also like anthropomorphising dogs so I decided to give it a go. This is the first in the series of Bernie and Chet detective books. I've never been into this genre. My brain's too obtuse to solve these fictional crimes, or any crime for that matter. I never know whether the author has sprinkled clues throughout the book so that the reader can also solve the crime. (I'm also the person at the cinema who doesn't 'get' those films with the 'OMG! Is that what happened!!' endings. Erm, what has happened?? Tell me! Examples include 'Blade Runner' - Deckard is a darn Replicant!; The Sixth Sense - Bruce Willis was dead the whole time. I've never played Cluedo but I assume I would be atrocious at it.) Anyway, I didn't guess the ending in this book which features a dog detective, Chet and his human cohort, Bernie. I was more amused by the goings-on in Chet's brain over the banal than I was in the actual story. Quite an enjoyable and easy read. Sometimes a lightweight read is just the thing to cure that down-in-the-dumps feeling.
