This was surprisingly fun. I picked it because it was on the non-fiction food list and Eggplant was in the title. Perhaps also because I've never lived alone but have eaten alone many times and an essay about that activity seemed interesting. It also reminded me of my mom's description of summers alone - my sister & I would stay with my dad on the other side of the country, and she had this big chunk of space and time for herself. Mom's Secret Summers, I think of them, and one of the few things she mentions is Eating Alone. My favorites were: Alone in the Kitchen with an Eggplant - you have to read the one that titles the book, obviously, but it was quite enjoyable to read about how the idea was born. Dinner for One, Please, James - much more like I eat alone. My daughter is an oatmeal & crackers sort too. We are told it is Bad but the essay sorta cleared that up for me. No its not. Beans & me - also funny but reminded me of growing up. We ate a lot of beans. Asparagus Superhero - hysterical. I laughed a lot. Making Soup in Buffalo - lovely description of the food remembered best from each place she lived. Potatoes & Love - recent discovery of Nora Ephron and her writing. I enjoy it.
