Although I had heard of the Lost Boys, I didn't really know their story. It's really a sad story of loss of country and cultural identity and of not really belonging anywhere. Between the challenges Valentino Achak Deng faced as just a young boy running from terror all around him and then later, learning to navigate in the United States as a refugee are hard to imagine. Eggers tells this story from Valentino's perspective with such authenticity and compassion. Despite everything Valentino goes through, he perseveres. His faith in God and in humanity is truly inspiring.
Set in a small scottish village, the story of a unwanted girl going to live with the village cailleach (single woman/witch) and learning how to cast aside the village prejudice and instead become a doran, worshiper of the land. The lessons Wise Child learns should be taught to everyone to male this world a better place.
This is a deceptive book. A simple, short memoir of a successful man who knows he is about to die from cancer at the age of 51. Much is expected but there are flashes of total, raw honesty that make it a must-read. Life is short, but long enough to read this. Almost worth 4 stars. Reminded me a LOT of my colleague Jim Herzog who died of cancer just a year ago at a very young age. You never know...
