This journal of a medical officer in the Great War gives a realistic and unsentimental portrayal of war and medicine. McGill was indeed one of those who felt it was not only his duty to participate, but that he needed to be in the front lines. It's interesting to read, in conjunction with this book, his correspondence with his sweetheart, a nurse, who became his wife during the war. My bookclub chose this, and I wasn't sure I'd like it, as Swedish-financial-S&M-murder mysteries aren't usually my genre . . . that being said, I REALLY enjoyed this book, great characters, interesting subplots, and an ending that made me want more. After traveling to Sweden last year I had a little more appreciation for their culture and societal eccentricities, and I really enjoyed the descriptions of the different cities and regions. But truly the characters are what drive the plot, and I'm curious to find out if that manuscripts that author Larsson delivered shortly before his death are continuations . . . I hope so!
