Three Men in a Boat (more than Three men on the bummel, which I hadn't heard of until now) is an absolute classic that most people outside the US, at least in the ex British colonies, have read and laughed through multiple times. One of the few books that have made me laugh out loud, regardless of where I was at the time, once on a plane, for instance, when everyone else was sound asleep or focused on watching the overhead movie. Excerpts from the book were fed to us in school, in English class. One particular story that stands out is "Uncle Podger Hangs a Picture", and I'm sure every one of us knows at least one Uncle Podger, the bumbling klutz who insists upon doing things his way despite all the oft repeated consequences of rework, injuries, and a dreadful end result.
My first favorite book. I blame Orwell for my high school interest in science fiction.
