Spotty good/bad. Another book I picked up solely for the Murakami short (TV PEOPLE), which upon completion in this case made me feel very uncomfortable.
One of my favourite books ever. It is about an 18th century daughter of a failed merchant whose brothers try to marry her off to a rich (old) Brazillian to pay off their father's debts. She runs off into piracy with one of her family's slaves and many adventures ensue. This book is heart-stoppingly exciting, I can't recommend it enough.
Dame Iris was a master of the themes of good, evil, and love in all its fallibility. She was a philosopher, influenced by Plato and Sartre, among others. Her books often explore morality, and she has been called a moral realist. That said, this book is a dark comedy of errors. Julius, the central character, manipulates his group of "friends" in a Machiavellian attempt to show how easily people will betray their friends and lovers.
*** This book gives a peek inside some famous structures from all around the world. I love the concept (how many times have you seen a picture of the Parthenon? How many times have you seen a picture of what's inside the Parthenon?), but I wish that the information about the structures had been displayed more prominently. It's printed in small type against the side of the page. I love that structures around the world are included, but the inclusion of a circus tent and a Shaker barn seem a little out of place. A neat concept with wonderful, detailed illustrations and a few flaws.
Quite fascinating...takes to back to Elizabethan times and to the first settlers who braved the voyage across to the New Land...well documented, historical fiction. Does become a mite long winded, but a good read for history buffs. It has made me want to visit Roanoke Island NC, where the story of the mysterious Lost Colony of settlers is played out.
