A detective, espionage, murder, assassination thriller all rolled into one. Set in Scotland and England before the second world war. Germans are the bad guys. Hero is Richard Hannay, a bored Scot with nothing to do, sucked into this world of conspiracy and mayhem by accident. No high-tech gadgets, or women, or car chases unlike in James Bond. But there are chases (in the countryside, Hannay mostly running/walking), clever disguises, cryptic codes. First published in 1915, and I am aware that 1915 was that too long ago, so I will never say this is a bad book. Some say that this is the first (or among the first) successful novel of this genre, so even if I find the plot so yesterday, like it is an old man who was the first in something, I treat this work with respect.
Just finished reading this during my own travels and I loved it! He has a great sense of humour. There are also a lot of fun descriptions of foreign cities as well as a story set in the infamous ice storm in Montreal! So much fun. I laughed out loud!
The stories were very average on the whole. Definitely not as good as the first volume.
