To be honest, I found this book a bit of a disappointment. I count Auster's Invisible among my favourite books and I couldn't wait to read this one, but it just did not deliver the same feeling. Most of all it felt quite forced, as if Auster really wanted this book to work. I can see what he was after and I believe that this idea is very good and compelling indeed, I just couldn't find it back in the words. This is one of the few books where the story between the lines is better than the actual story. 3 stars, barely.
I wanted to like this book more than I did, but I just couldn't connect with the author or her grief. Joan Didion seemed stiff, unreachable, unlikable and I could not relate with her story at all. This book just didn't agree with my emotions.
it takes a bit of time to get into the book, but once you're there its good. not the best book if your the type that reads 5 min here, 5 min there, etc.
if you are interested in reading, writing, or art then read this book. perceive this book as a whole made up of individual parts and you will be amazed to find yourself understand much more about art and writing than you previously understood. a good read. Take it slowly: word for word, until you have sentences. Don't skim this book! This is important!
