Interesting book about a boy in Japan who loves baseball. He goes to a snobby exclusive boys' school(always interesting), and his father is an old-school samurai who doesn't want to accept the new order of Japan in which all are commoners.
It was engaging enough that I finished it in one go, but it was still just good and not great. The plot wasn't innovative enough to make up for some imperfect characterization. The biggest problem was in the first half of the book, the protagonist and narrator is really immature, kind of an idiot in ways he shouldn't be, and generally unlikable, and then in the second half, after his circumstances have changed, it's as if he doesn't have any of the negative traits. There's not really growth; it's simply as if the author is ignoring the unlikable personality from the book's first half. The most interesting stuff is in Germany, in the past. It's entertaining and presents a good idea or two to think about, but the book's decent, not brilliant.
