I was a kid maybe in the 2nd grade when I read this book but I could relate to the story line because the main character was considered an outcast because she was big. In school, I gravitated towards the outcasts and I always tried to show them that there were good people who were not mean. My grandmother taught me that!
This is a meticulous and thorough look at events leading up to the war, told in a series of short vignettes. Each contains a quotation or fact from one of the main participants or a contemporary diarist, and the date of the event. It's an interesting technique for writing history. There were many insights into the thoughts and personalities of Roosevelt, Churchill, and Hitler. Some of the most intriguing sections for me relate to Churchill's thoughts and motivation for the bombing of civilian towns in Germany - perhaps to demoralize the people's support or in hope that it would provoke them to rise up against the Nazi leadership; but which only caused further resentment against the Allies and the Jews. This was a thorough and unique look at World War II history.
