Lady Julia Grey, widow and heiress, is determined to settle things with the half gypsy investigator Arthur Brisbane, who solved her husband's murder and who also won her heart. So, with her sister Portia and brother Valerius in tow, she sets off for the remote Yorkshire estate which Brisbane has purchased. They find a remote building on the moors, still inhabited by the remains of the aristocratic, inbred Allenby family, descended from King Alfred. Brisbane is rarely present, so Julia interests herself in the affairs of Lady Allenby and her two daughters, who have been left penniless on the death of her son, an Egyptologist. A gypsy who lives in a nearby cottage befriends Julia, but she, too, is keeping secrets. Julia gradually realizes that Brisbane came to this location for a reason, that he knows these people and has reasons to hate some of them. This may be the conclusion to a short series, but I hope not.
Loved it. I had a hard time at first because the main character was a little too much like Sookie Stackhouse. But, slowly she came into her own where I wasn't comparing the two.
Short sweet easy concept to grasp, but I don't agree with all her opinions. Really watching the words that I use & the thoughts that I think.
I found the book enthusiastic to read, full of romantic scenes. :)
Ok.. I liked this book.. When I first realized it was a biography, I faltered because those aren't usually my cup of tea. And in the first 70p, Oskar Schindler didn't really endear himself to me (can you believe I only vaguely knew who he was? and I live in Switzerland where we have holocaust survivors visiting our high schools!). But throughout the book, you realize that he is a flawed man, but he is a man who did all he could to save those he could save, at great personal risk to himself sometimes. An ordinary man who became extraordinary (flawed, but extraordinary) during a hellish period. And this book compellingly described the brutalities and horrors that marked Nazi Poland. 4*
Dude wanders around having interesting and slightly off-kilter thoughts about the world around him. It passes the time. You got something better to do?
This is where the series starts to get a bit dark and things don't end up all "happily ever after." The upside is we get to meet some great characters - Lupin and Sirius - even if neither of them are still around at the end of the book. The impact they have on Harry's life while they're in it is just wonderful.
