A somewhat overrated pair of stories, I'm afraid. Salinger was at this point in his abortive writing career falling into the habit of spinning these wheezy, long-winded stories/novellas for the New Yorker about the Glass family. The Glass children are precocious to the point of tedium. Salinger clearly loved his characters too much, and this is a fine example of how that can go painfully awry. Still, he has an amazing way with dialogue, and it's interesting to see how these stories have echoed through our culture in the last 40-odd years.
