I think that Jeffers lyrical illustrations really create a beautiful chord combined with Frost's words. I grew up in snow, and it is captured so exquisitely. I love this edition, but so much is communicated in the illustrations that I started to think about the words being overpowered or limited by the portrayal. I found most of the book, where there are animals subtly drawn in the trees- their image unfolding for the reader who pauses to look- to be in total support of the text, and not interfering. Quibbles: there is an unmistakable Santa-look to the main character, and the "promises to keep" line is illustrated with a family. This is a point that takes away a bit from the sense created by the poem alone. It also, for me, puts it in the voice of the other/a story about somebody, as opposed to me identifying. This seems is appropriate for younger children (and then skip to adults!), because of the picture book format.

At the core of this book is a dark and troubling secret that is carried from Afghanistan to California and back. But the writing is superb and I couldn't put it down. Read it before the movie comes out in November!

Set in Cornwall during the reign of Charles II, it tells the story of a love affair between an impulsive English lady and a French pirate. What a great love story. Its about Dona, Lady St. Columb who leads a boring life, until she meets a notorious French pirate who has been terrorizing the Cornish coast. Dona finds that the pirate, Jean-Benoit Aubéry is a fascinating and interesting man full of passion not only for life! This is a bitter sweet romance that is sure to bring yearning into your life. The movie is well worth renting.
