All I can say after reading this massive tome is that Mr. Gitlin's sixties were different from mine! I guess I was one of those people he talks about who took no interest in politics and wandered off in search of themselves. Not such a bad thing to do Todd, really! That being said, if you want a reasonable history of the SDS by someone who was involved in it then this is probably your book.
"Chowder" is a great book to use as a tool for teaching your students about text. The story includes different kinds of text styles, fonts, sizes and boldness to encourage students to see the importance of those words in the story. Students will also enjoy the story because it is fun and far-fetched, for example, there is a picture of Chowder using a toilet...kids will get a kick out of this story!
This one is weaker than the first which was Mystic and Rider. That's probably because the main character, Kirra, is just plain less interesting, although she's a shapeshifter. But the premise is a bit novel, Kirra's sister Casserah doesn't want to do a tour of the countryside to help strengthen her family's political power, so Kirra goes in her place. The novel suffers a lot from my desire to strangle Kirra for doing really stupid things like falling in love with someone while wearing her sister's appearance and ignoring her childhood companion, who would clearly be much better for her. But in the end it's more of the same. Everyone is after mystics. The end.
