Read March 2009 on spring break trip to ski in Alta and hike in Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks. I had never appreciated Joyce Carol Oates before. This book was beautifully written (see especially page one) and a technical masterpiece. Maybe it was being on vacation while I read it, so I could savor it, but I was astonished by this book and highly recommend it.
amazing! this is one of those "popular" books that always seems to be on the shelf next to "eat pray love" but that really lived up to my expectations (UNLIKE e p l). walls writes honestly but sensitively about her iconoclast parents, who failed their four children in so many basic ways (putting food on the table, for example), but at the same time exposed them to an artistic and unconventional life. her father's shortcomings seemed easily explained by his severe alcoholism, but her mother's complete narcissism was much harder for me to take. highly recommend.
People either love or hate this book - I loved it! Many complain about the simplistic writing style but I think that's just the point - the message of this book is for all to enjoy. An inspiring description of interconnectedness.
This book took FOREVER to finish. It was good, but not good enough to hold my attention
