I couldn’t put this book down. I needed to know what was going to happen to Emma. There was a lot of suspense and foreshadowing, which kept me reading (such as when Emma hugs her mom with her eyes). It was interesting how the characters did not change much from when they first told their story to when they spoke again later in their lives. At first, I was confused at deciphering the text, but then I realized that it was written similar to how a play is written. I enjoyed reading a book that was not written in the traditional sense. Plus, the book had a lot of atmosphere. It was as if I was really seeing what the characters were seeing and feeling.
This just didn't hang together as a novel. The character sketch of Lee is fantastic, although some of the other high school charcters are less believeable to me. And there were scenes that were spot on. But, there was no plot and I kept waiting for something to happen, but it didn't. Sittenfeld's short story in This is Not Chick Lit remains one of the best short stories I've ever read, but the two novels I've read have dissapointed.
