I actually prefer this one to her BDSM books. By taking more time in developing the realtionship and rounding out the characters, the book is a better balanced read.
We saw the movie first, which affected the way I read the story, but not as much as it would have with a lesser book. Schlink's story is erotic without being titillating, thought provoking without being overly moralistic. The characters have more depth than the movie let on - which is saying something. I really enjoyed and highly recommend this book!
I enjoyed reading it in Spanish, band was interested in the Dominican history. I found all the references to pop culture and sci-fi and fantasy culture distracting, especially all the footnotes. I didn't really like any of the characters, either.
