I've always loved studying church history. Up until reading this book, I found Donna Hill's work on Joseph Smith to be the closest effort to striking the right balance between historical and devotional. Bushman takes Hill's work a step further by showing readers that a faithful member (whatever that really means) can effectively reconcile the Joseph of the real historical record with the Joseph we discuss at Church. Bushman's thoughtful research proves that somewhere between the South Park and Sunday School narratives, lies an actual Joseph.
