This informative nonfiction read like historical fiction. While I learned about the scientific, geologic, social and political conditions that led to the Dust Bowl, it was the characters who lived through it who stirred me. My emotions rollercoastered along with theirs as they described their life saga during this decade in hell. My thoughts mirrored theirs as they fought for one more day of survival--or fought to leave. I was totally immersed in the experience of hardship, hope and hopelessness and now am totally in awe of the Americans who came through this. Let's not repeat the monstrous greed and self-serving ignorance that brought those folks to their knees. Or is it the nature of humans, the cycle of civilization?...
