A Call to Faith and Freedom is about the Celtic people fighting to save their religion and customs from being destroyed by the Christians. Along with being very informative this book also has four great love stories to it. A reader will finish this book feeling as if they have learned a great deal but also have read a wonderful story. Shirley Roe has skillfully combined the Celtic ways into the story of peoples lives in both the clans of Glenden and Dunmore. A reader learns just how dedicated the Celtic people were to their faith and their clans. Their are battle scenes that a reader can picture in their mind like it is happening in front of them. Then there are the tender and loving moments that touch your heart. The author shows you just how life in seventh century Scotland was, but in such a way that it isn’t like just picking up a history book. The story of the Glenden clan unfolds throughout this book beautifully. The Clan Chieftain’s daughter, Moreall, is in love with Armand, a very good army leader in war, but through the story she struggles with the choice of staying with Armand or becoming the High Priestess to help save their faith. The Chieftain, Angus, is trying to find his lost son while juggling a new relationship with Vika the clan’s wise woman. Armand’s brother, Ian, falls in love with Lilias, Moreall’s cousin. Ian is the Chieftain of the Dunmore clan. Throughout all of this they are trying to protect their clans and faith from being destroyed by the Angles. Shirley Roe is not only an excellent writer but a poet as well. She uses her poetry skill in a few parts of this book to make real the Celtic spirituality shine. Shirley Roe tells a very exciting and suspenseful story which keeps a reader reading from the beginning to the very end. I would recommend this book as a great read. I LOVED this book! It's humorous, yet it provides great information. There were so many good things I took away from this book. The main ones had to be: 1. Know that being a good step-parent takes time, effort and is going to be a bumpy road. 2. Know that this is totally normal and don't be hard on yourself. 3. Give everyone time to adapt to the new environment. It takes time. 4. Realize that everything you do or say will be put under the microscope of everyone on the outside. You aren't perfect and you are going to make mistakes, but as long as you do your best and communicate with your partner, you'll get through it. In fact, I loved this book so much, I think I'm going to purchase a copy!
