Good story, slow at the beginning but picks up the pace in book two and at the somewhat anticlimactic end leaves you wanting to get straight on to the two towers. Reading it after watching the movie may be the cause of any disappointments and highlights how great a job peter jackson did with it. None the less tolkein's vision is amazing and the history and depth he brings to middle earth make it so believable at times it feels like non fiction.

Fascinating time warp to France in the 18th century. Dark and disturbing.

So my coworker and I (she's Indian, I'm Chinese) talked about this book after I read it and how it so eerily mirrored both our middle-class, suburban, culturally-alienated lives. North Jersey xoxo. I'm a big Jhumpa fan and enjoyed Interpreter of Maladies. What I like about this as opposed to her short stories is that The Namesake isn't a series of disasters. Unfortunately my parents went and saw the movie and called me up for a long chat about family and guilt. It was awful--but the book was decent.
