I would have given this four stars if the protagonist was a more believable character. I think that the author did a beautiful job creating Sarah's voice. Her story was powerful, and while fictional, might well have been someone's real life story during France's Vel d'Hiv roundup during WWII. What a heartbreaking story... Unfortunately, Julia's character sort of blew the book for me. Stereoptyped American woman living in France and stereotyped French characters brought the book down a notch or two in my opinion. I think the author, who is French, would have done herself a better service by portraying the modern day character as a French woman. But I think she wanted to sell some books in the states. Pretty transparent to me. I also think that the author didn't give enough credit to her readers' level of intelligence: she explained too much of the obvious, and she set things up in such a contrived manner that much of the story was predictable. But glad that this part of history was brought to light. I learned something new.
