I really enjoyed this book--the characters were well-written and enjoyable, and the plot was good. At a couple points I felt like the progression of events was somewhat expected, but that didn't take away from my enjoyment of the book.

** spoiler alert ** I really liked the idea behind the book. It was also nice to read a book that wasn't about Greek Myths or vampires, but about Russian history and folklore instead. Joy Preble's writing style is not my favorite. I found that switching perspectives and the random placement of letters or journal entries, very confusing. I have seen authors like Jodi Picoult do this very well, but Preble didn't seem to have that same ability. I was continually confused about whose head I was in; Ethan's or Anne's. I would like to read the next book in the series to see how her writing improves. I am willing to join that journey with her and see how she develops these characters. I felt that the language and sexual references were unnecessary. Why did we need to know about Tess's loss of virginity? It had nothing to do with the larger story. For this reason I feel that I can't recommend it to anyone, which is really a shame.
