This is another book we read in the 9th grade. It is your typical Walter Dean Myers story, young black man must make a decision that will impact his life. My students, especially the boys, like to read this book because it involves basketbal and they all know at least one person like Ice, the protagonist's best friend who may or may not be dealing drugs. I say if the kids will read it, let's read!
When asked by a reporter if he had read this book about being a rookie guard in Sing Sing, the warden supposedly replied, "What do I care what some newjack thinks?"
Nice little book. Nice is such a yuck word. But, I can't say good. I liked it and am not sure why. Perhaps because it is honest and earnest and not trying to be more than it is. Good stories. So, ok, good little book. I would read more by her.
