Oh... this was good. Very good. Probably my favorite out of the entire Harry Potter series. The characterization was strong and the writing was tightly interwoven... But I won't ruin it by telling you the individual whys and wherefores. It will suffice to say that: (a) the epilogue is the silliest part of the entire series. (b) reading the first 6 books is worth it just to read this one.
Caution!! Spoilers Within!!! This book was on its way to earning at least four stars until the ending, which I found wholly unsatisfying. No one with such an established passion for climbing would do what Peak does at the end. I'm not talking about his selfless act, which I found admirable, but the fact that he could have reached his ultimate goal anyway, after giving Sun-Jo such an amazing gift, but for some reason elects not to. SPOILER ALERT!!!!! The fact that he chose not to climb the final ten feet (TEN FEET!!!!!) and hang is prayer flag himself is so illogical that it detracts severely from a story that was otherwise highly enjoyable.
