Oh Ian, I feel as if I should like you, but we never seen to quite work out. At least I am comforted by many of the other reviews where it seems I am not alone in not really understanding why you are one of the great writers of our times. Yes, you do write quite nicely and given the amount of self-published garbage I have read, this is no small accomplishment. Yet I miss the element of story-telling in your work. I don't understand your characters and why they do what they do and I really don't care what happens to them. That is rather sad for a book with a set-up like this. Perhaps I was spoiled by the movie. After all I did pick this book up to see if I could gain more insight into the characters than the movie presented. Imagine my surprise when it turned out the movie offered more in this regard. Only someone like Christopher Walken could play your villain and imbue him with some sort of motives through sheer presence alone as you certainly didn't give him anything to work with. Anyway, I am pleased to have read this since it is rare to find movies that are better than the books on which they are based and now I can add a new entry to that list. Recommended for those who are already in love with Mr. McEwan; all others know you get a pretty package here with very little inside.
