Milan Kundera's Being is a winding masterpiece of fiction featuring stories of two couples and maybe a third maverick woman, their lives irrevocably altered by the iron curtain of communism, making their way through the socio-political system, being doctors and womanizers, philanderers and philanthropists, and doing some ill-advised judo chops. There's a lot of stuff about love and communism and dogs wearing diapers, and really, I'm not qualified to write this review because I can barely remember it. I read it mostly in the airport on the way to visit my grandfather in Tennessee. But it was good, and I was able to recognize this, even as a werewolf, even in my youth.
