I find the saga rather slow-moving but somehow it still holds my attention. I'm 29 and here I am reading a teen series... but whatever, right?
brooks doesnt just "make the ordinary extraordinary" - she demonstrates the beauty of the every-day, as well as the humor. and sometimes the ugliness.
This was actually my second time reading this little book. It's interesting for several reasons. For one, it gives a glimpse into the process of building a plot. You watch as Holly presents tools on how to think up a plot and then you watch her use the tools herself as she starts building a story. So it's like watching a writer at work. Also, a lot of info found here is completely unique to this book - things I've not seen anywhere else, and I've read A LOT of books on craft. One caveat - if you're not an "outliner" this book might seem useless to you. However she does have sections on outlining while writing and outlining while revising. At some point, writers have to deal with plot and whether you choose to do it before or after your first draft, she has lots of tools for getting your Muse un-stuck. This book doesn't deal with how to craft scenes or build a character or strengthen dialogue - it assumes you already have a basic understanding of writing and storytelling. Still, if you can write scenes but just need help putting together a story, this should do the trick.
