A rattling good read - not high literature, but certainly high adventure. Kingly doubles, distressed damsels and princesses, noble heroes and dastardly villains! I shall now seek out the sequel, Rupert of Hentzau.
An eloquent and articulately written book. Banville is a writer that certainly challenges my vocabulary and I read The Sea slowly, looking up many words in the dictionary. His sentences are beautifully structured and often poetic in the most traditional sense, but I thought it was a bit predictable. Still, it is hard to find fault with a writer who is a master of his craft.
