I didn't like this book when I was forced to read it in high school. But I loved the movie with Julie Christie, and then re-read the book at university, and fell in love with Thomas Hardy's works. I think that teens are not always psychologically ready or emotionally mature enough for the books that are thrust upon them in school. It's a sure way to turn young people off reading the classics!

Pat and Jean Abbott are doing their war work in England, where Jean befriends some other American expatriates. They're invited to a traditional country weekend at the home of adman Steve Hayward and his charming wife. The first morning at the stately home, however, someone finds a body. Of course the murderer must be a stranger, a tramp or a German infiltrator--but Pat doesn't think so. Still, the English police know their job, and he's reluctant to get involved with anything not involved with shortening the War. When it seems that the police suspect an innocent member of the house party, however, Pat must act.

Overall a very interesting snapshot of 1750-1800 in America, though it's a bit long-winded in spots. One of the best parts is how Ferling will weave the names everyone knows in and out of his presentation of the story with little to no warning. You'll be reading about some low ranking politician in Boston and he'll say something like, "(Mr. low-ranking politician) frequently attended dinners at the home of a well-known silversmith named PAUL REVERE..." This approach may not work for everyone, but I enjoyed it. Ultimately, the book probably reaches a little too far with its scope, which is to be expected when you 're covering 50+ years of formative American history. It's worth a look if you want a detailed overview.

Definitely one of my favourites. The difficulty and frustration the heroine faces is easy to sympathise with. The romance was heartwarming, and the ending arrived with a deep sense of satisfaction.
