A controlled world in which a select few govern; an oligarchy; restrictive and regulated and impassive. I want in! Well, not "in" in, but this story, set in a future time, serves as a warning for what could happen when people fear simple, yet complex, emotions. The easy vocabulary makes it good read for children as well.

Cannot express the awe I had of the author's ability to paint the story. I was a fly on a well painted, textured wall, smelling the oleander. No, you cannot borrow it. I may have to put this in a safe deposit box.

I'm glad a friend shared this book with me. Life indeed has full of surprises. I think...this book found me, instead of me finding it. It came at a perfect time. It made me reflect and return to the basic and logical things in life that some people seem to forget, as they become entangled with the intricacies they encounter everyday. 'The Alchemist', a must-read. Glad it found me!

One of the fine ones. Heyer's nobleman-of-fashion characters seem to vary primarily on a cold-warm axis and a moral-immoral one; here, Alverstoke is far to the cold side of Gareth from "Sprig Muslin," but compared to Leonie's nobleman from "These Old Shades," less immoral and rakish than simply not very caring. The Merriville children are as charming as the author thinks they are, and Frederica is charming, and of course I always love Heyer's obvious affection for women who are frank and intelligent.

3.5 stars - for some reason I found this becoming hard work towards the end so I have had to knock some stars off.

Wow. I am surprised that I was still very engrossed in this book even though I knew most of the outcome. That is a talent of this author. I was most interested in the story of Anne van Cleve's because there is not much written about her (that I know of) and Philippa Gregory did not let me down. I was not sure what would happen to this woman so for me there was still suspense. Enjoyable read. Oh what an ass that Henry the VIII was.
