Amazing story! The first Gaiman book I ever read. It was funny (to the point of ridiculousness sometimes), clever, and a really really good story. An angel and a demon working somewhat together....a witch's prophesies.....the four horsemen of the apocolypse.....a witch hunter.....some kids.....just a really really good story. I can't even explain it...you just have to read it.
OK well I thought this was a great book of its time, however I found most of it to be rather tedious. The description was just too heavy for my liking and I became annoyed with the central theme of us vs. martians and how on earth did the martians think they were going to get one over on us jolly clever humans?? I'm pleased to have read this, and I do think that it's very cleverly done, however it just wasn't my cup of tea.
Updike passed away in January 27 this year, and reading the obituaries encouraged me to check out this collection of some of his stories. He is best known for his "Rabbit is Rich" series of novels, but he also wrote many short stories. Several of the stories were read by the author himself, and I enjoyed hearing his voice. I found many of the stories well-written and enjoyed much of the prose; but there was too much sexuality for my taste.
I read this book after I had a bad experience at a church that I had attended for a majority of my life. This book reminded me of why I love my God and that even if you consider yourself an educated, liberally minded person you can still claim Christianity with a genuine heart.
