I've heard the word 'heart-breaking' used to describe this book several times. I would agree, although it seems to me that part of the heartbreak is just the banality of it all, the hardscrabble life of the family, the terrible and yet not-uncommon hardships they go through. That said, Faulker does not top my list of favorite writers, but as an American icon with American stories to tell, I feel compelled to read him.

Wonderful!

I really thought this would end up being my least favorite of the three, but it wasn't. I liked (and disliked) them all equally. All the loose ends were pretty well tied up at the end, so I had a sense of satisfaction and completion when I was finished. All of these books just needed to be edited much more heavily---there are WAY too many details.

The only reason I rated this book 4 stars was because of Rephaim and Stevie Rae. I thought Zoey was kinda annoying and I wanted to skip through the parts she had in the book. I freaking LOVE Stark.... Not Heath. I do NOT want him back in the book. I thought he just added drama and was an annoying idiot. When he died, I literally jumped up on my couch screaming "YES!! HE'S DEAD! FINALLY!!" But no. Now he's back. Jack dying totally pissed me off. I was like NOOO!! WHY?! I loved him!! Now, to the good parts. I LOVE REPHAIM AND STEVIE RAE!! The whole entire book I wanted to read about them. And, the whole entire book I wanted Rephaim to be human and have them be together! Then he did. Then they kissed. I absolutely and positively loved it! I think I read that part about, what? 5 times? Yes, I am a Rephaim geek.
