I love Barbara Ehrenreich. I think Nickel and Dimed should be required reading. You know, the one where she went underground and worked at minimum wage jobs such as waitress, maid, etc. and wrote about what the working poor deal with every freaking day. So then she decided to go out and get a white-collar job, and then write about the job search, the work, etc. I wanted to read it because one of my very best friends has worked in high tech for years and lost his job 15 months ago. And he is still out of work. And it is DEPRESSING to watch the seemingly futile search. When Barbara E wrote this, who knew she was so prescient? This book is quite relevant to today's economic situation. Not required reading like N and D, but still good.

It's been a long time since I read a book that I just could not put down. The voices in this novel were so strong, you could hear them even after you set it aside -- and believe me, you will only set it aside because real life will make you set it aside. What a story.
