This is a book that haunts and resonates long after you read it. It speaks alot to the inevitability of change and the fear of becoming professional, intellectually, and personally obsolete. It is sad and painful, a story that makes you hurt but one that also makes you smile. It is one of the many books that I read at least once a year.

Now is the time to reread The Grapes of Wrath. It is the story of America as it was and as it is. On every page I gaped over paragraphs that could have been written about today's foreclosure crisis and recession, about our current distance from our land and food sources, about the sick irony of intentional waste and cruelty in the face of true need, and about the inevitability and self-destructiveness of greed and fear. This book is so incredibly well written it makes me hurt. It is also perfectly paced: full of detail when you are meant to slow down and think, compelling dialogue while you follow the Joads to see what the next day will bring. This book overflows with timeless truths about family, resourcefulness, economic progress, compassion. Although I enjoyed this book when I first read it (high school maybe?) I got so much more out of it now.
