Set in a post-apocalyptic world, the area that was North America has reorganized as Panem, a central government and twelve districts. As punishment for earlier attempts by the districts to overthrow the government, each district must supply two teenage tributes to compete in a yearly televised survival fight to the death. In district twelve, Katniss Everdeen elects to serve as a tribute when her younger sister's name is drawn. She leaves home for the Hunger Games knowing only one will survive and it probably won't be her. This book is full of adventure and suspense as the tributes fight to survive the wilderness, the gamemakers, and each other. I absolutely LOVED this book. It is the best Young Adult book I read from 2008. The writing and character development were wonderful. I became completely engaged in the story and Katniss and I couldn't put it down. This is to be the first in a trilogy and I am eagerly awaiting the next installment in September (not to mention a possible movie).
Riordan is the Jerry Bruckheimer of Children's Lit. This book is fluffy and fun, and doesn't pretend to be anything else. 8/10
