This is 1984 written by someone who actually experienced it.
I learned a lot about southern manners in this book. It reads almost like a connected set of short stories. Sarah Walters, the main character, is spicy, spunky and oh so unlucky in love. Sarah's mother, one of the many Camellia Society (creators of the debutante "code") members we meet in this book, is one of the richest characters in the story. Though she remains the quintessential southern belle in manners and mores, she is also the character with the biggest secret. One of the things I learned from this book is that I might like a southern man. You definitely have to read right through to the end of this engaging novel to see why.
