I really loved this book. Interesting topic (how black maids were treated by their white employers in the 1960'2), wonderful story, great themes- what's really important to children, the need to be brave and take chances, friendship, the importance of honesty-both to others and to oneself. Loved it! December 2010: I'm listening to The Help because a friend told me the 3 readers of the story were awesome and she was right-a delight to listen to. EXCELLENT audiobook-hard to "put down".
What a great way to get a background on Muslim-Americans and the struggle of one young woman. The time she was growing up in Indiana was not that long after I left, the author's discriptions of Indiana in the winter were so 'right on' that I felt i was looking out the car window with her. I kept thinking that the small town I grew up in would have been different....but i know that's not true. And I'm amazed that this whole community was so close and so unknown to me. As is frequently true these communities grew up close to the universities. I am particularly fond of books about women and diversity, so found this delightful, disturbing, insightful and a real joy to read.
