Wish this book continued. A great WWII read

I've never heard of the author, but it was intriguing. An Irish girl comes to America after WWII in the hopes for a better life. She is pretty much forced into it by her mother and sister, and somewhat anxiously goes. Discovers herself and love and blah, blah, blah. I liked it, but it moved too slowly. 52 pages is too much for one chapter. It's somewhat boring listening to someone rave on about themselves. In general, a good book. Not really sad or anything. Not really happy, either. More or less you'll zone out while reading it. Is oddly addicting for being boring and slow.

I'm giving it four stars because its a decent story and I'm curious to read the next one and see what the show is like. However, I had a lot of trouble getting into this because of the frequently shifting POV. While it did eventually settle to shifting between a reasonable number of characters, the frequency of the shift (every 5-10 pages) continued to be a problem for me. Rather than building anticipation, it totally broke my stride just about every time. At the end of the each chapter, I would at minimum put the book down for minute and stretch and I often put it down and go do something else. For this, I guess I should thank Mr. Martin in that it probably saved me some eye strain. But, I'm totally the type of person that, given an opportunity, would curl up with a book and a cup of tea for days. Though I enjoyed most of the characters and the plot convolutions, I couldn't have done that with this book. It seemed to act on my child-rearing-induced ADD in such a way that I found it difficult to read in anymore than 20 minute intervals.

This is now my favourite book. I love it. I wish there was an alternative ending where there was no Maud though, I think her existence makes the story a little less powerful. Also... Wolf Larson is really great and I relate to him way more then Sissy Van Weyden.
