Not scintillating literature for sure but was useful when I got my bad dogs. They are not well behaved, but it is not because of this book. The book was useful.

Again, another introspective book from Fulghum. He certainly has a unique world view of life and dealing with small annoyances. I especailly enjoyed his story of the best cigar he ever smoked.

A great, funny yet mysterious story. I loved how the author explains everything so well and expresses it too. I could easily imagine the story and the characters :). I can’t wait for the sequel.

Falcones’ novel is a sprawling epic that charts the life of Arnau Estanyol, son of a serf who flees an oppressive Lord for freedom and anonymity in Barcelona. Here young Arnau discovers the woman to whom he will dedicate his life – Santa Maria de la Mar, Our Lady of the Sea, to whom the people of the city are building a great church, to be filled with the light of the Mediterranean. As Arnau grows to manhood he becomes an apprentice to the tradesmen responsible for building the church of Santa Maria, while his adopted brother Joan joins the church. With the shrewd assistance of his servant and friend Guillem and the aid of a Jewish merchant, Arnau becomes a successful businessman, while Joan has a different type of success as an Inquisitor. Fourteenth century Spain is a dangerous place to be different, to make enemies, to defy rigid church doctrine. Inevitably the different careers and ideologies of Arnau and Joan will bring them into conflict, and the catalysts will be the young woman Arnau loves, and the one whom he is forced to marry. It is a loveless match, and such a marriage is itself an affront to the church. Meantime there are wars waged between the various regional kingdoms throughout Spain, with Barcelona itself threatened with invasion by an enemy fleet. Although Falcones has taken some licence with the facts, Cathedral of the Sea is nevertheless an entertaining introduction to the history of medieval Spain, and despite the sheer size of the novel (over 630 pages) it managed to hold my interest throughout.
