A classic - the grandparent of modern literature. You might not recognize the names, and the characters may be obscure, but the themes and the images it creates are not only memorable, but have shaped and recur in some of the greatest works of western literature in the last 600 years. Aside from its timeless themes, it's also great to see Dante get some digs at his contemporary rivals by damning them to one of the infernal tiers of hell. A great translation (that i didn't find on Goodreads) is the Durling translation that includes the original italian on facing pages and extensive annotation behind each Canto that explains the more esoteric concepts and characters.
Okay. hangs together. explaination might have been better left out. But good tale
Brilliant, beautiful, devastating. Another modern day classic that I will be keeping on my shelves for a re-read. Highly recommended.
