KSR is usually brilliant, and this book started out promising to be great. However at a quarter of the way through I began to wonder whether the author had been partaking of some sort of psychotropic substances. The plot began to evaporate and the story digressed into a myriad of seemingly pointless little side trips. After several renewals at the library and only managing to read just under half (and that was a struggle), I took the book back. For me to not finish a book, let alone one by my favourite author, was just awful. This book actually left me depressed that KSR was never going to write another fabulous book again, but thankfully, "40 Signs of Rain" arrived shortly after and I'm feeling excited again.
You'll acquire a profound respect and appreciation for soldiers, police, and first responders in general after reading this chilling examination of just what those professionals have to cope with. It also serves as a sobering reminder of just how conditioned for violence our society is becoming.
