Wow, 2002 was a good summer for dense fucking sf paperweights! If the Baroque Cycle is Stephenson's Lord of the Rings, Cryptonomicon is the Hobbit, up to and including a mysterious wizardly type and a lot of buried treasure. Stephenson puts in unthinkable hours of research to build a living, breathing backstory, but what he really wants to do is take you swashbuckling through the jungle, fighting bad guys. I am frequently disappointed by how Stephenson manages his endings, but Cryptonomicon includes one of his best, second to Diamond Age.
