I HATE RATS (my apologies LC)
My favourite SK book is "The Stand", which is a completely different story to UTD, but has a similar theme. Some sort of invisible but inpenetrable dome is placed over a small town in Maine (duh), cutting its residents off from the outside world. This isolation brings out the best and worst in various sections of the townsfolk and reminded me in some ways of "Lord of the Flies". The characters are well drawn as usual, and the reader gets a real feel of what drives them on. Despite its 880 pages, the story flies along and there's never a dull moment. I'm not crazy about all of SK's novels, but I think he excels when he writes with an armageddon theme. UTD is not the masterpiece that The Stand was, but if you're a fan of SK and enjoyed The Stand, it's likely you'll enjoy this too.
