Book #4 of 2010 So I finally got around to reading this and I'm not sure what I think about it. Somehow, the relationship between Sookie and Bill just doesn't seem... very convincing. And I think I'm a Sam fan. Also, something about vampires being "mainstream" just seems wrong.
A fantasy novel, exceptional in its willingness to take on religion as an important motivator in lives, and for a fascinating system of magic. It showed some complexity of character development, for example when Hraden, an arch villain becomes honorable in the end. A weakness: the good guys sometimes talk like they are from the early 21st Century.
What was lost was a day of my time. The story line sounds interesting: a young girl who loved to play detective goes missing and a 22 year old male neighbor she has befriended is suspected. She is never found and the young man leaves town never to return. The story picks up 20 or so years later from the point of view of the younger sister of the suspect and a few other people who all work in the shopping mall at which the missing girl had frequently conducted survellience. I was waiting for the "fascinating plot twist," or however it was described in reviews, but that twist managed to be both unlikely and predictable all at the same time. I had to give it two stars, though, because there are definitely far worse books.
