this was my least favorite sarah waters. though written just as well as her other novels, i just couldn't get into it in the same way. her other novels have more intrigue and suspense or just plain old drama. maybe this was just more subtle and i wasn't prepared for that. i just know that with waters's other 3 novels, i literally could not put them down (for my smith friends-- i read "tipping the velvet" almost entirely in 1 day while at the haymarket). "the night watch" i put down several times and didn't finish for a while.
it was a slow moving story but beautifully written. i can't even really remember the ending...
