Paul Fussell is a jerk, but he's funny.
After seeing this movie for about the 6th time I finally got my hands on a playaway. I had always wanted to read this classic. The movie was very close to the book with the exception of a lot of Chief's inner voices. The narrator Tom Parker did a nice job. When Randall Patrick McMurphy swaggers onto the ward of a mental hospital (avoiding a work camp) you can feel the sparks fly. He is about as onery a red-headed Irishman you could ever meet. Gambling, joking and just full of himself. When he and Big Nurse meet the war begins. Big Nurse runs the ward by the rules and Mac is out to break everyone of them. It is such a moving story. You may think he is looking out for number one but as the story continues you can see that he genuinely cares about his fellow patients. He does turn them from rabbits to men. I am glad I finally read the book and have a little more insight to the Chief's life. You would have to be living under a rock not to know the end of the story. So I will say no more other than even if you saw the movie six times it is still worthy of a read or listen.
Entertaining but definitely not his best. Got a little sappy at the end.
