This is not a type of book I'd normally read, but I had to teach it to my freshman class this fall. At first I really liked it; I could just sit back and read and someone told me a story that was compelling on many levels -- scientifically, historically, geographically, etc. Eventually I tired of it, but what kept the book going for me were the characters, the situations they were in, and the ethical questions raised. Interestingly, many of my students disliked the characters. Ah, well -- typical. Since I know very little of science, I was grateful to learn a bit about cells.
