Interesting, but really far too long.
Only Simon Vance's seductive narration of the audiobook kept me from giving up on this microscopic recounting of a grisley 1860 murder. The book is a well-written integration of the details of the murder with a history of the rise of real-life detectives and detective fiction. As such, the book should be interesting, even intriguing. Unfortunately, however, it's boring. Just too much minutiae and too much of what feels like filler material. Yawn.
